As the holidays and winter temperatures greet us, individuals and families gear up to sightsee and seek adventure. Despite the cold air, a quick trip away from home can often mean a warm welcome in both familiar and unfamiliar destinations. It’s often during the season of unwinding and relaxing when we seek to return to the places we most enjoyed during the warmer months. I had such a great time exploring Lancaster, Pennsylvania, that when the opportunity was presented to return for a winter getaway, I couldn’t resist. It was the perfect chance to rediscover the city and to experience places and events I had yet to see.
If you’re considering a getaway to Lancaster, here’s how to make the best of your trip:
Book a Stay at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square
Situated in the heart of Lancaster, the Marriott at Penn Square is conveniently located near the most popular attractions, including Central Market, Fulton Theatre, and the attached Lancaster County Convention Center. The hotel is also a short drive from Amish Country, where visitors can explore rural Pennsylvania culture and Amish heritage. The property offers a range of rooms, including standard guest rooms and suites. On-site dining options include Two Kings– a new breakfast restaurant, Plough, which offers a modern American menu, and The Exchange– a year-round rooftop and bar with an unbeatable view of the city. There is also a Starbucks in the lobby. The Convention recently hosted ExtraGive 2024 in November. This annual event supporting local organizations raised over 9 million dollars.
Enjoy tastings at Wineries and Distilleries
Lancaster is home to many wineries and vineyards, as well as tasting rooms. Waltz Vineyards Estate Winery sits on 35 acres of land and features estate-grown premium wines. This sixth-generation family farm produces world-class European-style wines. Waltz’s wines have received many International, National, and State awards. Each wine is made only from hand-picked, carefully selected fruit. The European-style tasting room offers a seated tasting experience where guests can customize a wine flight or choose a glass or bottle to share. Reservations are recommended. Thistle Finch Distillery is a hidden gem. Located just a short walk from downtown, there are many ways to experience Thistle Finch. Formerly known as the Walter Schander Tobacco Warehouse, the historic building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. The Distillery offers tours and bottle sales and houses Burley Bar & Restaurant. The tour takes you behind the scenes of the distilling process and the origins of rye whiskey in Lancaster and Pennsylvania. There are plenty of other spirits made as well. Tours are only offered twice on Saturdays, so book ahead.
