Known by most as “The First State,” Delaware is the second smallest U.S. State but offers plenty to see and do. During the winter holiday season, locals and travelers alike head outdoors to join festivities and spread cheer, and the Wilmington area’s local flavor helps make Delaware a top holiday destination. With a charming downtown area, vibrant riverfront, and plenty of popular landmarks surrounding the city, travelers should consider Delaware as their next holiday destination.

Here’s how to plan the perfect holiday adventure in Delaware:

There is a courtyard open seasonally for dining and unwinding. Simmer Down is located on the lower level in what used to be “The Money Room.” This speakeasy-style bar serves classic cocktails and was recently named one of ‘The Best Bars in America 2024 ’ by Esquire. The decor is stunning, and the drinks make the evening even better. For those seeking a view from the top, The Quoin Rooftop is Wilmington’s first and only Rooftop Bar & Lounge. With one-of-a-kind views, light fare, and cocktails, the roof is a sure hit.

Enjoy Excellent Cocktails and Cuisine

There is no shortage of options for enjoying crafted cocktails and fine dining in Wilmington. From small pop-up bars to fine dining and breweries, choosing a particular place may prove to be difficult. Blitzen is a seasonal bar serving holiday-themed drinks in a cozy space. The main bar and den are beautifully decorated and are described as a visual experience, immersing guests in this popular space. Farmer & The Cow is a downtown restaurant and bar serving elevated pub fare, fresh blended burgers, shakes, and over 400 whiskeys. After trying the Bleu Steel burger, it’s easy to see why they were recognized as one of the Best of Delaware in 2024. Owned by James Beard semifinalist Chef Bryan Sikora, La Fia is a must-visit. Executive Chef Dwain Kalup is a Beard nominee who prepared inventive seasonal fare. The intimate space is perfect for enjoying small plates and rustic entrees. Crow Bar is located in Trolley Square and is under the same ownership. The menu features global, chef-inspired small plates and cocktails. The Steak Frites are a hit! For weekend lunch and brunch, Park Cafe is a welcoming space and also has a dog-friendly patio. Iron Hill Brewery also serves brunch despite being most known for its selection of beer and comfort food.

Take in History at Historic Estates and Mansions

The guided holiday tours of the area’s historic mansions are cherished by visitors of all ages. Festive decorations, lights, and other planned activities at these unique sites are stunning. A visit to Yuletide at Winterthur is highly recommended. Henry Francis du Pont’s 175-room home is decorated under a different theme each year, and hosts live jazz performances, workshops, and more. Holidays at Hagley takes place at the ancestral American home of the du Pont family. Located at the Hagley House and Museum, this site celebrates the French holiday traditions that the family would’ve participated in. Visitors can enjoy home and garden tours, the Gingerbread House contest, and even get a look at some of the cars driven by the family. Known as “America’s Versailles,” Nemours Estate sits on a 3,000-acre plot. Alfred du Pont built this for his wife in the early 20th century and the family began opening their home at Christmas. The 77-room mansion is immaculately decorated during the holiday season and hosts live performances. Select areas of the gardens and the chauffeur’s garage can also be viewed.

Shop Tax-Free

Delaware is a tax-free shopping destination. The price you see on items is the price you pay. This makes the state a popular choice for shoppers when buying holiday gifts. Christiana Mall is a favorite and is easily accessible from I-95. The mall is home to over 130 stores and restaurants, including Nordstrom and Macy’s department stores. Other stores include Apple, Lululemon, and Uniqlo. A 17-screen Cinemark theater is also on-site for viewing the latest box office releases. Christiana is the place for style and savings.

“The First State” should be one of your first choices when considering a holiday getaway whether traveling solo or with friends and/or family.
